Trekking in Procida: Itinerary 2 – Punta Solchiaro (South)

Total distance (round trip): approx. 5.5 km

Walking time: 1.5–2 hours (depending on stops)

Difficulty: easy, with some gentle uphill stretches, panoramic circular route.

This itinerary took us to the eastern and southern parts of Procida, rewarding us with spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius in the background, Capri in the distance, and Ischia getting closer and closer as we approached Via Solchiaro.

Procida island

The route: departure from Procida Camp Resort – La Caravella

  1. We exit the resort onto Via Scialoja, turn right onto Via Pizzaco, and after about 100 meters stop at the Elsa Morante Belvedere: a postcard-perfect view over Marina di Corricella and Chiaia Beach.
  2. We continue along Via Pizzaco until we reach the junction near Villa Lavina, a former Bourbon hunting lodge. From here, we take Via Alcide De Gasperi, a road that runs along the coast with a wide sidewalk and a scenic garden.

🌊 Towards Punta Solchiaro Near the Seno del Carbogno, Via De Gasperi intersects with Via Solchiaro, where we find another panoramic viewpoint. The road climbs gently among elegant villas, blooming gardens, and small orchards until it ends in a cul-de-sac: we’ve arrived at Punta Solchiaro, the very tip of the peninsula that reaches out toward Ischia. Access to the sea here is only possible through private properties—though their gates and gardens are often open… just enough for a quick peek!

The Western Side

  • We retrace our steps for about 200 meters and, near Villa Manni, turn right. Keeping to the right, the narrow lane leads us to the opposite side of the peninsula, where a breathtaking view opens up over Ischia, Monte Epomeo, Vivara, and Punta Palombara.
  • We rejoin Via Solchiaro, using a pink house with a roadside shrine as our landmark. A bit further on, we spot the Chapel of Santa Maria delle Agonizzanti, built in the late 1800s when Solchiaro and Centane were still wild lands inhabited mainly by farmers.

🏡 Return to the Resort We continue along Via Solchiaro, cross Piazza Centane, then follow Via Lavadera, Via Giovanni da Procida, and finally Via IV Novembre. In just a few minutes, we’re back at the blue gate of Procida Camp Resort, with hearts full of the nature, history, and unforgettable views this route gifted us.

Route Variation: Toward Chiaiolella and “Graziella”-Flavored Gelato

Total distance (round trip): approx. 6 km

Walking time: 2–3 hours (depending on stops)

Difficulty: medium-easy, with some downhill and gentle uphill stretches

If you'd like to extend the route, at Point 5 in the description, just after the pink house, continue on Via Solchiaro until it intersects with Via Simone Schiano. This road will gently lead you down toward Chiaiolella Port, one of the liveliest and most picturesque spots on the island. Here, you can choose to:

  • Continue all the way to Chiaiolella Beach, perfect for a refreshing break or a swim.
  • Or head back up along Via Giovanni da Procida, which will reconnect you to Via IV Novembre and the resort.

Recommended Stops on the Way Back On your way back uphill, I highly recommend stopping to visit:

  • The Ancient Sanctuary of San Giuseppe, a beloved place of worship for island locals.
  • The gelateria Il Grottino, famous for its unique "Graziella" flavor—named after the heroine of Alphonse de Lamartine’s novel Graziella, set right here in Procida.

A stop here is practically a must: the gelato is delicious, and the literary story behind it adds a poetic touch to your walk.
