Trekking in Procida: Itinerary 1 – Former Lighthouse of Punta Pioppeto

Total distance (round trip): approx. 5 km

Walking time: about 1–1.5 hours (depending on stops)

Difficulty: easy, flat, coastal/scenic

The Pioppeto Lighthouse, the oldest on the island, is located in the northern part of Procida, along the coastline facing the mainland—Monte di Procida and Capo Miseno. This lesser-known area, far from the usual tourist routes, features a beautiful coastal path surrounded by greenery and overlooking the open sea. Today, the lighthouse is no longer operational and is considered a historical monument—an important symbol of the island’s maritime heritage, and once part of a network of coastal watchtowers that guarded the Gulf of Naples since the Bourbon era. When we walked this itinerary in May 2025, the lighthouse was under renovation, but the Punta Rossa trail and the mysterious old keeper’s house made the visit absolutely worthwhile. hanno valso la visita.

Procida island

Route:

Departure from Procida Camp Resort

  • We exit the resort through the blue gate on Via Monsignor Scotto Pagliaro and continue onto Via Vittorio Emanuele, the main road that connects much of the island’s neighborhoods.
  • After about 800 meters, spotting a pharmacy on the left, we turn shortly after onto Via SS. Annunziata, a narrow street that cuts across the island from east to west. On roads like this, it’s essential to stay to the right and walk close to the wall, as a local kid cheerfully told us— “sotto ‘o mur”, in dialect.
  • The road curves into Via Regina Elena, and near an old building and a pizzeria, we turn onto Via del Faro, a charming little street lined with homes, gardens, flowers, and lemon trees. This leads us directly to the northwestern tip of the island.
  • Continuing for another 500 meters on the left, the houses and pavement give way to trees and shaded bushes: this is the dirt path known as Punta Rossa, fully immersed in nature. Along the way, to the left, we notice a crumbling house with a light green door and the sculpted face of a menacing mascaron on the wall beside it. To the right, through tall broom bushes, and unfortunately hidden behind safety barriers, we glimpse the old lighthouse—“weary and worn,” but still standing guard over the stunning blue expanse stretching out before us.
  • To return to Procida Camp Resort – La Caravella, we headed back via Via Vincenzo Rinaldi, then Via Cavour and Via Vittorio Emanuele… making it a near-complete loop.
