Many people ask us whether Procida is a child-friendly island. Although it seems a bit chaotic at first glance, with its narrow alleyways, the hustle and bustle of its inhabitants mingling with the upturned noses of tourists, the cheerful chatter in the harbour and the cries of the seagulls, it is full of hidden corners that children will enjoy exploring: the colours, the cats, the sea, the fishermen's nets, the walls for playing hide and seek... Procida is a cheerful world full of new things to enjoy!
Here are our suggestions for places to visit and activities you can do during your holiday in Procida with children:
Marina della Corricella
The picturesque fishing village, with its pastel-coloured houses, has become the symbol of Procida. You can only get there on foot, there are no cars, and children can play around, run freely and play hide-and-seek among the nets lying on the quays. There are plenty of small restaurants to dine in, and a delicious gelato shop, to take an afternoon break while admiring the boats floating in the harbour.
Where: Via Marina di Corricella 80079 Procida NA
Nutrimenti Bookshop
Nutrimenti is both an independent publishing house and a small shop, where you can find all the beautiful works that tell the island's story. It is located a few steps from the harbour in a pedestrian street and there is an entire floor dedicated to children's books with a large number of illustrated editions; here adults and children alike can fly on the wings of fantasy for a while!
Where: Via Roma, 54, 80079 Procida NA
Chiaiolella beach
Perfect for a day at the beach with the kids. Here, deckchairs and umbrellas are available, as well as bars and restaurants with terraces overlooking the sea, to cool off in the shade while the children play in the sand. The beach is safe and sheltered from the wind, the sea is clean and the seabed is shallow, making it ideal for small children to swim there safely. If you are at Camp Ciraccio, you can go down to the beach opposite and reach Chiaiolella by walking along the seafront for a few minutes.
Where: Via Marina Chiaiolella, 80079 Procida NA
Chiaia Beach
Here the sun shines mainly in the morning, but at any time of day the waves are calm and you can swim and play safely. The descent to the beach is only a few metres from Camp La Caravella, but the staircase to access it can be awkward. If children are small and you have pushchairs, we recommend avoiding the steps and using the ramp on the opposite side of the beach, about a 10-minute walk from the resort. At Chiaia you will find a kiosk and an excellent fish restaurant, which also rents out beach umbrellas.
Where: via Pizzacco for the descent with steps, via dei Bagni for the ramp
Garden by the sea of enchantment
A recently renovated green area designed for families: 5000 square metres of public park with a view of the charming Asino beach. The garden is an oasis of Mediterranean vegetation in Terra Murata, in the heart of the historic centre: where once the inmates of the former Palazzo d'Avalos prison cultivated the land and raised livestock, you can now stop for a picnic in the shade of lemon trees.
Where: Via Terra Murata, 33, 80079 Procida NA
Dinghy tour around the island
Rent an inflatable boat, with or without a skipper, and set off to discover Procida as seen from the sea: you will discover caves, ravines and small beaches that can only be reached by boat. Children can dive among the colourful fish while their parents relax in the sun, lulled by the waves. Admire the lighthouse, the island of Vivara and the colourful houses reflected in the sea from afar! For organised tours or dinghy hire, ask the reception at our camps for advice.
Excursion to the island of Vivara
If you are in Procida with the family, the Vivara nature reserve is definitely worth a visit and for a few hours the children will feel like little explorers. An experienced guide will show them how to recognise animal tracks, the chirping of birds and the scents of the vegetation. The walk is simple and suitable for everyone, but not with buggies. The island of Vivara cannot always be visited and the guided excursion must be booked in advance. Check dates and availability on the dedicated website, you can find all the information here.
Electric bike tour
The bicycle is a great option for visiting the island in complete freedom, but what if you have small children? In our La Caravella and Ciraccio camps, electric bikes are available for rent, some of them are equipped with a child seat for children u p to 6 years old. Getting around on foot can be tiring in the middle of summer and if the bus is not your preferred means of transport, getting around with electric bikes will be easy, fun and sustainable!
